Why Most Thyroid Treatment Doesn’t Work

My wife’s younger sister was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  That makes it pretty much a clean sweep of thyroid issues in her family except for her.  Her mother, father, sister, and both grandparents on her mother’s side all have hypothyroidism.  I’d like to mention that I believe that hypothyroidism is one of the most mismanaged diseases out there.  Every single person in her family was given the exact same treatment even though they were all seem by different doctors and the treatment does nothing to fix the issue.

People are diagnosed with hypothyroidism with a simple blood test looking only at the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).  This is not even a thyroid hormone.  It’s a pituitary hormone that tell the thyroid what to do.  So people are put on a thyroid hormone which causes a feedback to the pituitary and causes it to produce less TSH.  So what can happen is the medication can cause the TSH to lower and look ideal, however, hypothyroid symptoms usually continue because it’s not addressing the issue.  The number 1 cause of hypothyroidism in America (by far) is an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s.  This is rarely tested for in the medical community because the treatment doesn’t change for them.  However, research has shown that people with this condition are able to regulate their thyroid condition much better on a gluten free diet.  I learned this a long time ago from my Chandler chiropractor and my wife has been eating gluten free for years and so far is the only person in her family without a thyroid problem.  To learn more, ask my chiropractor at ApexMedicalAZ.

The Risk of Having an Overpronation

Overpronation’ is a badly used term that is frequently thrown about in running communities in regards to runner’s feet and the selling of running shoes. Pronation is a natural normal motion that the foot goes through when walking and running.  Pronation is the feet rolling inwards at the ankle joint and the mid-foot of the feet collapsing. The body must do this to help adapt to shock. Overpronation happens when there is allegedly a lot of pronation. There isn't any consensus among the specialists just how much is too much and even if it is indeed a problem or not. There are plenty of runners who overpronate that don't have problems.

There is a widespread thought that overpronation adds to the risk for injuries in runners and the evidence is that it does, however it's only a small risk factor and many other factors go into runners having an injury. Due to this alleged risk for injury running shoes have been usually manufactured for mild, moderate and severe overpronators. The most rigid motion control running shoes are designed for the most severe overpronators. Those that have no or minimal amounts of it are thought to be far better off in neutral or stability rather than motion control shoes. This model for the prescription of running shoes is not supported by the evidence and some evidence disagrees with it.

Overpronation is only regarded as an issue if the loads associated with it are enough to harm the tissues. In these cases foot orthoses are generally suggested for the short to medium term and then based on the cause of the overpronation, gait retraining and muscle rehabilitation is used in the medium to long term. Where problems also arise around the use of the term, addititionally there is the problem that there is not one cause of overpronation. There are lots of causes and no one size fits all. Foot supports will work in some people long term. Muscle rehab and gait retraining can work in the long term in others. That's the reason you should figure out the main cause to start with and direct the intervention at this.

What is the Common Condition Called Plantar fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common condition affecting your feet. As it is so common, everybody appears to have a viewpoint on it and there is a lot of bad information about it. As there is so much bad advice getting given for it, there are plenty of cases of it not getting better, consequently the subject is fertile ground for snake oil salesperson producing the next best remedy for it.

Just what is this condition? It is at first an inflammation of the plantar fascia that is a long ligament that connects the rearfoot bone to the front part of the foot. After that first inflammatory period, it then gets to be a degenerative process. The cause is when the cumulative load on the plantar fascia is larger than what the tissue will take, so it gets damaged. This is a condition of too much use of a "ligament" which can not take the stresses.

The usual signs of this condition are discomfort under the rearfoot which is generally worse after getting up from rest, mainly in the morning after having a nights sleep. While these same symptoms can be due to other conditions, more often than not these symptoms do indicate plantar fasciitis.

How should it be treated? The most apparent approach is to go back to the aforementioned cause. First of all you should decrease the strain on the plantar fascia with the use of calf muscles stretching, strapping of the mid-foot and the use of foot orthoses and/or supportive shoes. This would start the recovery process. Once the very painful phase is over, exercises can then be used to strengthen the plantar fascia, so that it is better adapted to the strain that is put on it.nnThat is more or less .

There are many other approaches being advocated for it, but they are mostly aimed at healing the damaged tissues. Nothing is wrong with that, but the principal purpose of whatever therapy is used ought to be to reduce the strain in the painful tissues and help to make the tissues stronger so that they may take the load.

Feet are a complicated part of the body since there are numerous small bones that are joined together by a lot of ligaments and moved by a lot of muscles. Furthermore we take the bodyweight on the feet and subject it to so many stresses and strains. To make it even worse we place the foot inside the artificial environment of a shoe. It's for this reason that the profession of podiatric medicine exists since there is just so much which will go wrong with the foot and associated structures. Podiatric physicians make use of a lots of different interventions to treat problems of the feet and lower limb.

Foot orthotics are often used to manage the wide array of conditions that may go wrong with the foot. The purpose of foot orthotics are to improve alignment of the feet towards a more corrected normal alignment or to decrease the stress in structures of the foot which might be causing symptoms so that they can improve. The foot supports achieve this via having different design features which are meant to match the foot. A customized foot orthotic will do that. However, over the counter orthotics can do this, generally by chance. They may or might not match the foot of the person with them in contrast to a custom made insert will. There are many different designs that can be varied, like the elevation of the mid-foot ( arch ) and also the level of shock absorption. There are even designs referred to as Kinetic wedge and Cluffy wedge.

At times the more affordable over-the-counter type supports are better and other times the custom ones are more effective. Knee Injuries and the ACL

Athletes are always at risk of injuring their ankles, knees or low back depending on the type of stresses the sport puts on their bodies. A common injury of the knee is to a ligament known as your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).  There are four major ligaments in the knee that control the joints mobility. The anterior cruciate ligament teams up with the posterior cruciate ligament to form a “X” and controls the back and forth movement of the knee.  Some common ways that the anterior cruciate ligament can be injured includes: taking a direct blow to the knee (such as in football), landing from a jump incorrectly, slowing down and/or stopping  suddenly and a rapid change indirection during a competition.

Almost half of all injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament occur along with damage to other structures in the knee, such as articular cartilage, meniscus and other ligaments.  Most ligament injuries are considered sprains and are graded on severity. A grade one injury is considered a mild sprain of the ACL ligament which causes a stretch of the ligament but still provides support. A grade two injury is considered a mild tear and stretches the ligament to a point where it becomes loose. Stability of the knee is compromised with this type of injury. A grade three injury is a known as a complete tear with the ligament being in two parts. The knee is completely unstable and needs surgery to fix at this point.  Feel free to contact your Apex Medical Group or your local Chandler chiropractic office for more information on this subject.
